Artist StatementI typically begin a piece by researching my subject. An image might pop in my head when the creative spark strikes, but the research helps me develop the idea and refine my intention. As a printmaker I enjoy the methodical process of thinking in reverse, building my matrix, scraping, inking and pulling the print. In contrast, my collages are more immediate, whimsical and colorful. I reuse and rework printed images while giving myself permission to be spontaneous. I have a background in graphic design and a love of type, so text often makes an appearance.
My current work is inspired by two intimate points of view: that of becoming a parent and the natural reevaluation of my own childhood—the youngest of three children in a career military family. I am fascinated by rules and enjoy evaluating their need or absurdity. In my current work, I explore the concept of accepted procedure while incorporating social, religious, scientific and mathematical influences. I especially enjoy exploring why someone sets rules and why people follow them.
