| 2/25 | Dry Pigment Transfer Technique: Monoprints Incorporating Drawing Media Dry Pigment Transfer Technique: Monoprints Incorporating Drawing Media
The print begins as a drawing on tracing paperwith graphite, charcoal, soft pastels etc. which is then transferred to a plate and treated so that it can be printed in conjunction with many other techniques, including adding color films with a roller, multi-color viscosity, chine collé, etc. Because the drawn marks are "offset” on to the plate, the printed image appears in its initial orientation, eliminating the need to reverse the composition when making the original drawing. Additionally, other drawn images, as well as the pigment left on the originaldrawing after the transfer, can be treated and printed in a collage approach. More often than not, the plate with the transferred information may be reworked and printed again, allowing for the serial development of a group of related works. This technique, when mastered, can yield images of elaborate design and vibrant color but is equally suited for printmakers working in black and white. This technique and clean-up methods are non toxic.
Instructor: Suzanne Manns Joining the faculty of the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 1975, she established a substantial printmaking department, upgrading both its facilities and teaching concepts. Ms. Manns has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally, internationally and throughout Texas; including Flat Bed Gallery, Austin; the Galveston Art Center, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. | 3/24 | Lithography without a Stone (Pronto Plate Lithography) Lithography without a Stone (Pronto Plate Lithography)
Polyester Lithography plates were developed forcommercial offset printing, and rather than using the "greasy” principle for creating ink-holding marks, they may be imaged with any water-proof material that will stick to the plate during printing. Polyester lithography involves creating an image on a polyester plate using water-proof substances such as Sharpie markers, Future floor wax, litho crayons, copier toner, ball point pen, finger prints, etc. Polyester plates, also called "pronto plates,” contain itty-bitty pores. By covering those pores with an image created using ball point pens, Sharpies, etc., you create an area that will repel water and accept ink.. Instructor: Anna Kinbar
When: March 24th, 10am-5pm
Where: The WPA Studio
Cost: $75 per student
Note: a minimum of 3 participants are required.
PreparationYou can either draw an image during the workshop right on the pronto plate or send Anna a digital version so that she can have it printed for you during the workshop. Anna will contact each participant before the workshop. |

The Dry Pigment Transfer method incorporates both the media and the aesthetic of marks used in direct drawing using the monoprint approach to printmaking.
Viscosity printing involves the application of 3-4 layers of different colored inks to one plate and printing the plate with only one run through the press. The first application is an intaglio wipe. The second, third, and sometimes fourth layers are placed on the plate using different viscosities of ink (stiff & oily) and rollers of varied durometers (soft & hard). The plate requires different levels or elevations in the surface such as you would get with a collagraph or a plate that has at least three different levels of depths .
