Experimenting with Polymer Plates!

Polymer plates offer an alternative to traditional etching techniques which can be slow and complicated using hazardous materials. Polymer plates are exposed using the sun or an exposure unit. Once exposed, the plate is developed with ordinary tap water, making it much easier and safer for the printmaker. This workshop will explore both the new Solarplate and the KM 43 Photopolymer plate.

Location: Craft at 4704 E Cesar Chavez, Austin, TX 78702

Date: Saturday October 21st, 2017

Time: 9:30 to 4 with a break for lunch

Instructor: Carol Hayman

Tuition: $135

Enrollment: 6

No WPA Discounts fonr this workshop

What to Bring: Tuition includes one Solarplate (8 x 10), one Photopolymer KM 43 plate (8.5 x 11), and six quarter sheets of Rives BFK white (11 x 15). You will need to bring an apron, disposable gloves, lunch, and at least two transparencies printed with images of good contrast and texture. They can be scanned drawings, paintings, photographs, or any image with a good range of light to dark. Graphic Arts will make transparencies of your image(s) for about 13 dollars plus tax per 8.5 x 11. You can upload your image online and then pick up the transparency at their facility at 3217 North 1-35. Email your image to output@graphicartsinc.com, specify for Solarplate and pay at pickup by check or cash. They also scan for an additional charge. Transparencies made at office supply stores and/or Kinko’s will not make successful plate images. You can also bring your own good cotton rag paper for printing such as Rives BFK, Arches Cover, or Lenox. Additional plates and Rives paper will be available for purchase. Images with good contrast expose well and if you need help with your image or have questions contact Susan Randle. Results are not guaranteed with this process as it is somewhat trial and error. Come with an open mind willing to explore this exciting way to print!

For more information or if you need help preparing your image you can contact Susan Randle here.
