Gelatin printing is a fun, inexpensive printing process that anyone can do. It can be used for fine art, crafting, scrapbooking and so much more. It encourages creativity and the use of unexpected materials from everyday life. It is also a great project to do with children. This workshop is for those with little to no experience with gelatin printing and will give a good overview of skills needed for future experimentation at home. This process is excellent for those who do not have access to a press or have limited time to commit projects.

No experience is necessary for this user friendly process. Those who take the first workshop are welcome to take the second to further hone their skills. Participants familiar with the process can learn advanced techniques and get the opportunity to experiment with different kinds of ink.

Learn how to create and care for a gelatin plate.

  • How to create and use stencils and other materials for printing.
  • Creating layers of texture, how to use inks, and composition.
Class will be held in WPA’s Bone Black studio space at the Canopy Art Complex.

Supply List (Blue items Necessary)

  • 4 boxes of unflavored gelatin (need this to make your plate, not to bring to class)
  • 9X13 cookie sheet (clean, smooth, and free of oil residue) (need this to make your plate, can also use to transport plate)
  • rectangular plastic food storage tub at least 5" wide and 3" deep
  • small water spray bottle
  • apron (recommended)
  • thin plastic cutting board white (recommended) otherwise workshop will provide wax paper
  • tweezers (some available at workshop)
  • wooden spoon or baren (some available at workshop)
  • soft rubber brayer (some available at workshop)
  • additional paper (card stock, rice paper) basic paper supplies provided by workshop
  • TV tray (recommended if you have one already)
Stencils and Stamps
A large selection of stencils will be provided for use during the workshop but add a personal touch by bringing your own stencils.
  • Stencils can be just about anything that is mostly flat or can be pressed flat. Here are a few options: cut paper, pressed organic materials, found objects, string
  • Stamps can be non-flat objects that you press to the plate or to the print, this could be a commercial made stamp, a domino, home-made stamps, anything that you would press and then remove, plastic and metal objects can be coated with gesso or paint to help them pick up ink better
