Dry Pigment Transfer Technique: Monoprints Incorporating Drawing Media

The Dry Pigment Transfer method incorporates both the media and the aesthetic of marks used in direct drawing using the monoprint approach to printmaking.

The print begins as a drawing on tracing paperwith graphite, charcoal, soft pastels etc. which is then transferred to a plate and treated so that it can be printed in conjunction with many other techniques, including adding color films with a roller, multi-color viscosity, chine collé, etc.

Because the drawn marks are "offset” on to the plate, the printed image appears in its initial orientation, eliminating the need to reverse the composition when making the original drawing. Additionally, other drawn images, as well as the pigment left on the originaldrawing after the transfer,can be treated and printed in a collage approach. More often than not, the plate with the transferred information may be reworked and printed again, allowing for the serial development of a group of related works. This technique, when mastered, can yield images of elaborate design and vibrant color but is equally suited for printmakers working in black and white.

This technique and clean-up methods are non toxic.

Joining the faculty of the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 1975, she established a substantial printmaking department, upgrading both its facilities and teaching concepts. She continues to teach Drawing and Printmaking and is the current Head of the Department of Works on Paper. Ms. Manns has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally, internationally and throughout Texas; including Flat Bed Gallery, Austin; the Galveston Art Center, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Her work is in numerous private, corporate and museum collections.

Note: minimum of 5 participants required.

What to Bring

  • Beveled plexiglas or metal plate no larger that 14” in either dimension
  • Scotch-Brite green scrubbing pad or Scotch-Brite sponge with a scrubbing pad on one side
  • Several pieces of tracing paper at least the size of your plate
  • Some or all of the following drawing media depending on how you want to draw:
    • Ebony black graphite or 6B graphite pencils,
    • Soft compressed charcoal,
    • Soft vine charcoal, 14” in either dimension
    • Good quality soft pastels such as: Alpha Color,Unison Handmade Pastels, Sennelier, Schmincke Soft Pastels, Rembrandt Soft Pastels, Conte a Paris Soft Pastels. Almost all of these are sold individually or insets. A small set for experimenting will do if you don't already have pastels in your cache of supplies.
  • 1 or more 4” speedball brayer soft, the tan one not the back hard one
  • Flexible ink knives, at least one, more if you have them
  • Apron or smock
  • Notebook or paper for taking notes
  • Lunch


9:30 am -12:30 pm demo:
Plate prep, drawing prep, drawing transfer, mixing the activating ink, transferred image activation, additional drawing activation, adding color using ink films including viscosity color separation, using stencils, printing first impression and subsequent versions.

12:30 – 1:30 Lunch

1:30 – 4:30 guided printing session and final summation.

This event requires the full amount must be paid in order to register.

If you cancel by 2/19/2012 (more than 5 days) you will receive a refund of $87.00 (half of the entry fee).
NO REFUNDS for cancellations after 2/19/2012.
